2011 Rays Lunch - WHAT YOU MISSED!
Who knew a Chamber luncheon could produce a Tampa Bay Rays victory? An audience of more than 300 gathered Friday, April 15 at the Tampa Marriott Waterside for the Chamber’s annual luncheon with the Rays sponsored by the St. Petersburg Times. On deck for the event were Tampa Bay Rays Coach Joe Maddon, President Matt Silverman and players including John Jaso, Matt Joyce and Cesar Ramos.
Coach Maddon took the stage to offer his insight on the season’s progress to date, but then took things a step further in terms of audience partricipation. Coach pulled a blank lineup card out of his jacket pocket and called on the crowd to produce the batting order for their game that night versus the Minnesota Twins.
The audience chose left fielder Sam Fuld to lead off, followed by newcomer Johnny Damon. And in the largest reaction of the day, right fielder Matt Joyce was the overwhelming selection to bat third. How successful was the Chamber membership in their offensive strategizing? The Rays produced a 5-2 victory at Tropicana Field that night. Matt Joyce in particular went 3-for-4 with a double in the win, which helped extend the Rays winning streak.
